Neighborhood Bully

Writer: Bruce SieboldBruce Siebold

Meet the neighborhood bully, the bald-faced hornet. This aggressive hornet feasts on honey bees, flies, spiders, fruits and flower nectar, and if threatened by humans will deliver a venom filled sting that will make you feel like your skin is on fire. Believe me, I have felt their fury. Their nests are basketball sized and have a look of molted gray paper. When I spot one, I slowly back away and take the long way around, for they are fearless in defending their nests. So always be mindful of this neighborhood bully, and only admire their beauty from afar.
