During my daily walk on Eighty Acres I was fortunate enough to encounter this doe. We both froze in our tracks. I was downwind of her, so she was not able to locate my position. But she knew something was not right and during our 15 minute encounter, I was able to observe several unique signals coming from her tail. Wildlife biologists believe deer will use their tails to send eight distinct messages. This deer is using the "flare" signal. The deer's long rump hairs flare out signaling to nearby deer that all is not right in the woods. As the doe turned its head I was able to bring my camera up and click a few shots. We then both departed, continuing our walks in opposite directions on Eighty Acres.
