On My Belly On Eighty Acres

Bruce Siebold

Taking time to slow down and look at the little things on Eighty Acres can be rewarding. Thus is the case with the Bracken Ferns that are numerous on Eighty Acres. They are beautiful ferns, often growing upwards to three feet tall and giving a soft and tropical look to the woods floor. For many years I simply walked by the emerging feathery fronds; until one day I slowed down, got down on my belly, and noticed how the fronds have such unique shapes as they unfurl. Early on, their shapes are often referred to as "fiddle heads". But this day their shape took on more of an elephant trunk appearance. The next day I hurried back, once again got on my belly, but the elephants had silently disappeared during the night.
